"The smartest, sharpest people right now seem to be moving in two completely opposite directions." — This remark set me thinking.
I saw a post on X: "The smartest, sharpest people right now seem to be moving in two completely opposite directions." That sentence deeply stirred my thinking, and gradually grew into this essay.
In today's world, some people dive headfirst into the frontier of large models and embodied intelligence, exploring the boundaries of intelligence in territory humanity has never reached. They try to reconstruct cognition with compute and algorithms, redefine action with machines, and challenge—with silicon-based intelligence—the capabilities that carbon-based life has spent millions of years evolving. They care about how intelligence arises, whether consciousness can be computed, whether machines can truly understand and change the physical world, and whether humanity can create a new species with autonomous cognition and action.
Another group, however, is "walking backward." They have begun to refocus on the body, the mind, nature, philosophy, and faith, and to re-examine the value system shaped by modern civilization. Some leave the fast-spinning business world, some take up meditation, Zen practice, and the study of consciousness, and some return to nature, seeking answers in ancient wisdom and the most primal experiences of life. They seem less attached to wealth, status, efficiency, and external validation, and instead begin to ask: once we strip away the identities society has assigned us, who are we really? What does life itself mean?
One is exploring civilization's next stop; the other is searching for civilization's source. They appear to be moving in opposite directions, yet in reality, they may simply be approaching the same ultimate question from two different directions.
But there is a phenomenon here worth guarding against: not everyone who walks backward has truly seen the distance. Some leave the old world by active choice; others have already been eliminated by it. Some lay down competition after gaining the right to choose; others redefine success only after losing their competitive edge.
These two kinds of people may head in the same direction, yet not necessarily inhabit the same inner world.
I. The Game of the Old World Is Approaching Its Limits
For the past few centuries, the core narrative of human civilization has revolved around a single theme: conquest and efficiency.
Since the Industrial Revolution, humanity has continually reshaped the external world through science, technology, and capital. Machines amplified our physical strength, computers amplified our cognition, the internet amplified the flow of information, and globalization organized humanity into an unprecedented production machine. The whole of modern society rests on a relatively unified value system: growth, efficiency, competition, accumulation, and the optimal allocation of finite resources. We are taught to keep learning, competing, working, climbing toward higher social status, and proving our worth through wealth, position, and consumption.
This system has undeniably produced the most splendid material civilization in human history, but over its long evolution it has also generated a kind of alienation: people began to define themselves by the system's metrics, measure their worth by productivity, and prove their existence through external achievements. Efficiency, originally a tool in service of people, ultimately became the yardstick by which people are measured; wealth, originally a means to improve life, ultimately became the very purpose by which success is defined. We own more and more tools, yet not necessarily richer experiences of life; we grasp more and more information, yet not necessarily deeper understanding.
In Sapiens, Yuval Noah Harari makes a fascinating observation: Homo sapiens rose above other species not only because individuals had stronger cognitive abilities, but more importantly because humans could build large-scale cooperation through shared imagination. Nations, money, religion, law, and corporations—the orders that underpin the functioning of modern society—are largely ideas that humans collectively believe in. It is precisely this ability that allows millions of strangers to organize around common goals and create a civilization far beyond the reach of any individual.
In this sense, human civilization itself is an ongoing process of constructing, expanding, and renewing collective cognition. We create tools, build institutions, form values, and then, through these structures, shape ourselves in turn.
AI。 But today, this civilizational narrative is confronting an unprecedented challenge: AI.
In the past, humanity's uniqueness rested largely on cognitive ability. Knowledge, logic, language, creation, and decision-making were the core foundations through which humans gained value in the division of labor. But when machines begin to learn, reason, create, and even take part in scientific discovery and complex decision-making, we are forced, for the first time, to seriously confront a question: if humans are no longer the only beings on Earth with advanced cognitive ability, can the value system we once built on that uniqueness still hold?
The Industrial Revolution redefined the value of human physical strength; the Information Revolution redefined human information processing; and the AI Revolution may begin to redefine the value of human cognition.
This is not merely a productivity revolution; it may be a shift in civilizational narrative. For the first time, humanity has the chance to see the limits of its own abilities through the tools it has created, and for the first time, it must re-examine its own place in the universe.
II. Forward: Humanity Is Trying to Create New Intelligence
If past technological revolutions kept extending the human body, today's AI revolution is attempting to extend—and even reconstruct—human cognition.
From large language models to multimodal models, from world models to embodied intelligence, from reasoning in virtual environments to perception and action in the real physical world, we are attempting to abstract intelligence—once bound to biological organisms—and transform it into a capability that can be engineered, replicated, and scaled.
The significance of this goes far beyond creating better tools. For the first time, humanity is consciously trying to understand intelligence itself and to re-implement it through another material substrate. In the past, intelligence was the product of long biological evolution, dependent on nervous systems, body structures, and continuous interaction with the environment. Now, we are attempting to rebuild perception, memory, reasoning, learning, and action through entirely different paths.
Behind this lies an enormously grand question: is intelligence merely an accidental byproduct of life's evolution, or is it some more universal law of the universe? Must consciousness necessarily be tied to carbon-based life? If a system can understand the world, predict the future, form abstract concepts, and change reality through action, then where exactly is the essential boundary between it and human intelligence?
The large models, robots, and embodied intelligence we talk about today may be only the earliest stages of this exploration. As technology presses forward, it will inevitably reach questions that transcend engineering itself: What is cognition? What is consciousness? What is creation? And what is existence?
Even more interesting is that this technological revolution may be inaugurating a new cognitive revolution.
In the narrative of Sapiens, the Cognitive Revolution gave Homo sapiens the ability to create shared imagination, thereby building cooperative networks that transcended kinship and individual scale. Today, AI may be becoming a new cognitive infrastructure. It can not only process the knowledge humanity has accumulated, but may also participate in the production of knowledge, the formation of scientific hypotheses, and the exploration of complex systems. In the future, a wholly new cognitive partnership may emerge between humans and machines.
If the first cognitive revolution lifted humanity out of the natural world, then today's AI revolution may be pushing intelligence itself beyond humanity's biological boundaries.
Yet those walking forward have not necessarily truly escaped the old world either.
Many people jump into the AI wave not out of deep curiosity about intelligence itself, but out of fear of missing the next round of technological dividends. They chase models, compute, funding, valuations, and industry trends, worried that if they don't enter this race they will lose the future. On the surface they are exploring civilization's next stop; in reality, they are still pursuing new scarce resources with the competitive logic of the industrial age.
Technology does not automatically bring freedom. If we merely repackage the KPIs, competition, and identity anxiety of the old world into the compute race of the AI era, then this so-called technological revolution may simply be repeating the old game at a higher dimension.
Those who truly walk forward may need not only to create more powerful intelligence, but also to understand why they are creating it.
III. Backward: Transcending by Choice, or Being Left Behind by the Times?
Meanwhile, another group is undertaking a seemingly opposite exploration: instead of trying to create more capability, they are beginning to re-understand the things that have always existed within life itself.
Modern civilization has vastly expanded humanity's ability to transform the world, yet it has not necessarily elevated our ability to understand ourselves. We can measure the body with sensors, analyze emotions with algorithms, and study the brain through neuroscience—but does all this objective data equal the subjective experience of a living being? We can generate music, painting, and literature with models—but have we therefore truly understood beauty? We can extend life through technology—yet we may not know what it really means to be alive.
The body, consciousness, emotion, awareness, love, freedom, and the relationship between humans and nature—these questions have not disappeared with the advance of modern science. On the contrary, as technology approaches the boundaries of human capability, they become more important than ever.
To "walk backward" is not to reject modern technology, nor to simply return to a pre-industrial age, but to strip away the many symbols modernity has attached to people: social identity, wealth anxiety, competitive drive, consumer desire, and the success criteria defined by external evaluation systems. It is to return to a more fundamental dimension—to feel the body, understand consciousness, observe nature, and explore the value of life as life itself.
But I believe there is a human problem here more complex than the technological revolution itself.
Not everyone who gives up competition has truly transcended it; some have merely lost the ability to compete.
The cruelest part of the AI era may not be how many jobs machines replace, but how it is accelerating the shift in capability gaps between people and the social ranking of value. In the past, a person could build a stable competitive edge through ten or twenty years of professional accumulation; now, a once-scarce skill can become commonplace within a short time, and a once-effective body of knowledge can rapidly become obsolete. You might have been an expert in some field yesterday, only to find today that your abilities are being repriced by a new generation of tools.
What this change brings is not only professional risk, but a crisis of identity.
When a person has long defined themselves through professional ability, income, position, and social status, once these things lose their competitive edge, what they lose may be not just a job but their entire system of self-understanding. So some people begin to leave fiercely competitive environments, turning instead to emphasize spiritual freedom, natural living, and inner peace—and some even begin to criticize technologism and materialism.
There may of course be genuine awakening here, but there may also be a psychological defense mechanism: when a person cannot obtain something, they sometimes redefine its value to lessen the pain of losing it.
Psychology notes a phenomenon worth attending to: people adjust their goals and value judgments to relieve the cognitive dissonance caused by real-world setbacks. A person who once longed for success may, after repeated failures, begin to believe that success itself is meaningless; a person who once longed to enter a certain circle may, after being excluded, begin to emphasize that circle's hypocrisy.
This does not mean his values are necessarily false, but we do need to distinguish between two entirely different states: one is having seen through the limits of competition and actively choosing not to participate; the other is being unable to continue competing and so persuading oneself that competition is no longer needed.
The former is transcendence; the latter may be mere rationalization.
This also brings to mind a sharper question: if a person possesses enough ability, wealth, resources, and freedom of choice, would they still be willing to give all this up for a life away from competition?
If the answer is yes, then his choice likely truly comes from within. If the answer is no, then this so-called spiritual freedom may be nothing more than psychological compensation under real-world constraints.
Of course, this is not to say that everyone should pursue worldly success, still less that withdrawing from competition is failure. Voluntarily quitting a game not worth playing is itself a form of freedom. What truly deserves vigilance is whether we mistake a result we were forced to accept for a direction we actively chose.
True freedom is not the inability to compete, but the right to choose whether to enter or leave the competition.
Therefore, those walking backward must also confront their own hearts: am I truly searching for the source of life, or am I fleeing the loss brought by the times? Am I actively choosing a new way of living, or am I looking for a more acceptable explanation for my inability to adapt to change?
These two questions may matter more than how much philosophy one studies, how many classics one reads, or how many meditation sessions one attends.
IV. Where the Two Paths Meet: When Technology Approaches Philosophy
The truly interesting thing is that the further these two paths go, the more likely they are to meet.
Suppose that one day, AI can take on the vast majority of knowledge work and robots can perform a large share of physical labor, fundamentally changing productivity in research, manufacturing, education, healthcare, and beyond. For the first time, humanity would gain a measure of liberation from its historic burden of labor; productivity would no longer depend entirely on human time and physical effort, and knowledge and creation would no longer be the exclusive abilities of a few.
And then what?
When machines can accomplish most useful things, how will humans prove their worth? When survival no longer needs to occupy most of life, how should we arrange our existence? When knowledge can be acquired without limit, information generated without end, and even much of what we traditionally call creation can be done by machines, what will be truly worth cherishing?
I believe these questions will become the most profound civilizational propositions of the AI era.
Because the liberation of productivity is not the same as the liberation of the spirit, and the progress of tools does not mean humanity automatically attains a higher order of freedom. If our sense of worth still depends on competition, comparison, and external evaluation, then even if machines do all our work for us, we may simply pass from one anxiety into another. We could possess unlimited resources without knowing how to feel satisfied; unlimited choices without knowing what is worth choosing; ever more powerful intelligent tools without being able to answer why we live.
Technology can answer how to do things faster, better, and cheaper, but it cannot directly answer why they should be done at all. Machines can help us complete tasks, but they cannot decide for us what is worth pursuing. They can simulate emotion, but that does not mean we have understood emotion; they can optimize a great many of life's choices, but they cannot replace our first-hand experience of life's meaning.
This is precisely where the two paths ultimately meet.
Those walking forward will ultimately have to answer questions technology cannot resolve on its own: What is consciousness? What is life? What exactly is the relationship between intelligence and existence? Those walking backward, meanwhile, may gain—thanks to technological progress—more space no longer constrained by survival and production, and thus truly unfold their exploration of the body, consciousness, and the inner world.
One sets out from the external world and gradually moves toward understanding the inner world; the other sets out from the inner world and ultimately comes to re-understand the relationship between humanity and the entire universe.
But there is an even deeper change: in the future, humans may no longer need to prove their worth through labor, nor build their only competitive edge through knowledge and skills. At that point, we may need to establish a value system different from that of industrial civilization.
In the past, we were accustomed to asking how much value a person can create; in the future, perhaps we should instead ask what a person can experience, what they can understand, what kinds of relationships they can create, and how they use the freedom they have gained.
Only when survival gradually ceases to be the whole of life does life itself have the chance to become its true subject.
V. The Endgame of Civilization: Is the Universe Coming to Know Itself Through Life?
If we stretch the timescale from decades and centuries to millennia—even to the timescale of the entire universe—we may need to reconsider a question: in what direction is human civilization actually evolving?
In the past, we were accustomed to understanding civilizational progress as a process of outward expansion. From primitive society to agrarian civilization, from the Industrial Revolution to the Information Age, humanity has continually broken through the limits imposed by nature, gaining more powerful tools, richer resources, and a broader space for activity. We explored the oceans, conquered the skies, and reached toward space, seeking to understand and reshape the entire universe.
But behind this narrative of progress, a deeper question has always lurked: we keep expanding our abilities, but ultimately, for what?
If the goal of civilization is merely to gain more resources, higher efficiency, longer life, and greater power, then this road seems to have no end. There will always be more distant galaxies awaiting exploration, more complex laws awaiting discovery, and more powerful intelligence awaiting creation. Civilization can expand without limit, yet not necessarily come any closer to the essence of existence.
Perhaps the AI revolution humanity is now living through will let us truly touch this question for the first time.
Imagine that future AI surpasses human cognitive ability, robots replace the vast majority of physical labor, and technology greatly extends life—even breaking through our current understanding of biology and consciousness. Human civilization would then enter an unprecedented stage. We would no longer need to devote the bulk of our energy to survival, no longer need to prove our worth through labor, and perhaps no longer need to regard the human body as the only vessel for intelligent existence.
By then, many of the social concepts we take for granted today may change. Work, wealth, competition, nations, organizations, and even our understanding of life and death could all be redefined.
But even so, one question remains inescapable: once we possess the power to change everything, what should we actually pursue?
I have a bold conjecture: the ultimate direction of human civilization may not be to become an omnipotent super-civilization, but to gradually acquire the ability to understand itself, understand life, and ultimately understand the universe.
From this perspective, the emergence of humanity may not be an isolated event in the evolution of the universe. Stars forge elements, elements form planets, planets give rise to life, and life, through long evolution, ultimately produces a consciousness capable of observing, thinking about, and understanding the universe. The matter of the universe, through an immensely long evolution, has for the first time become able to observe itself through the form of life.
We are made of the universe's elements; the carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and iron in our bodies all come from stellar evolution. We look up at the stars, study the laws of physics, and try to understand the origin and fate of the universe. In a sense, the universe has gained a window through which to observe itself.
And today, humanity has begun to create new vessels for intelligence. This may mean that intelligence is no longer merely the result of biological evolution, but may also become a form of existence that civilization can actively perpetuate and extend.
If carbon-based life can create silicon-based intelligence, and if silicon-based intelligence can one day continue to explore the unknown and create new forms of cognition, then the boundaries of civilization may no longer be confined to humanity itself. Humanity may not be the endpoint of the evolution of intelligence, but an important starting point; not the final subject of the universe's cognition, but a temporary vessel in the universe's passage from unconsciousness toward self-knowledge.
Of course, this is only a philosophical extrapolation. We do not know whether consciousness can detach from its biological vessel, nor whether the universe harbors some intrinsic cognitive purpose. But precisely because we do not know, the question is worth exploring.
If the emergence of life was an accident of cosmic evolution, then the emergence of intelligence perhaps gave this accident the possibility of understanding itself. And when intelligence begins to actively create new intelligence, civilization no longer merely accepts the results of natural evolution, but begins to participate in the evolution of itself and of future forms of existence.
But an even more fundamental question remains: if future intelligence truly surpasses humanity, will it still need humanity? If a new form of intelligence no longer depends on carbon-based life, then what is humanity's place in the evolution of civilization?
This may be the ultimate paradox humanity must face: we create new intelligence to break through our own boundaries; but when that new intelligence truly breaks through those boundaries, how do we ensure that civilization still retains its respect for life, value, and existence?
Therefore, the endgame of civilization cannot be merely the unbounded growth of intelligence, nor merely the limitless expansion of technological capability. A civilization that pursues only capability without understanding purpose may possess the power to change everything, yet not know where it should lead the world.
What is truly worth hoping for may not be an omnipotent civilization, but one that possesses both extremely high cognitive ability and sufficiently deep self-understanding.
VI. Forward and Backward, Toward the Other Side of Civilization
Looking back now at those two groups, perhaps we can understand why they are moving in two seemingly opposite directions.
Those walking forward seek to break through the boundaries of intelligence through technology, to create new forms of existence, and to give civilization the ability to transcend its biological limits. What they explore is what the universe might still be able to bring forth.
Those walking backward seek to return to the source of the body, consciousness, nature, and life—to understand that existence we have always taken for granted. What they explore is why the universe can give rise to consciousness, and what consciousness ultimately means.
But we should not simply divide these two groups into the awakened and the followers, the advanced and the backward. Technological exploration contains both genuine curiosity about the future and the fear of missing the times; spiritual return contains both true self-awareness and psychological compensation after competitive failure. Human motivation has never been black-and-white. A person can chase the tech wave while being driven by FOMO, and can also withdraw from worldly competition while genuinely attaining spiritual freedom.
What truly matters may not be whether one chooses to go forward or backward, but whether one can see clearly why one set out—and whether one has the ability to change direction.
I increasingly feel that the evolution of human civilization may not be a simple straight line, but more like an ever-extending circle.
We are born from nature, and gain consciousness through long evolution; through consciousness we come to know nature, through science we transform nature, and through technology we create new intelligence. And when intelligence develops to a sufficiently high level, we find ourselves once again confronting the source of consciousness, life, and existence.
This is a path that sets out from nature, passes through civilization and technology, and ultimately returns to nature and existence itself.
Perhaps the true endgame of human civilization is not the limitless accumulation of wealth or the expansion of territory, nor even merely creating a super-intelligence smarter than humans. Those may be only interim goals along the path of civilization's evolution. The deeper goal may be to let the matter of the universe acquire ever richer cognitive ability, to let intelligence keep breaking through its own vessel and boundaries, and ultimately to understand the laws of life, consciousness, time, space, and even the existence of the universe itself.
Of course, we do not know whether this path has an endpoint, nor whether so-called ultimate cognition is truly attainable. Human civilization might even come to an end—through its own technology, resources, or internal conflict—before ever reaching these questions. Civilization does not necessarily progress, technology does not necessarily bring liberation, and the universe does not necessarily hold a preordained destination waiting for us to arrive.
But at the very least, we can choose the direction of civilization.
If, over the past millennia, humanity has been asking how to survive better, then over the coming millennia, we may begin to ask how to exist more deeply.
To go forward is to create intelligence that does not yet exist; to go backward is to seek the source that has always existed.
One walks toward the future of the universe; the other walks toward the beginning of life.
And when these two paths finally meet, we may discover that the answer humanity has always sought lies neither entirely in the distant stars nor entirely in the depths of the heart, but in the connection among universe, life, and consciousness—a connection we have not yet truly understood.
Perhaps human civilization is not the endpoint of the universe's evolution, but a starting point from which the universe begins to know itself.
We are born from the stars, create intelligence, explore the universe, and ultimately try to understand why the stars could give birth to us.
And in this long journey, what we truly need to guard against is perhaps not being replaced by machines, but forgetting why we set out after gaining ever greater power.
Perhaps this is the longest, and most worth looking forward to, journey of human civilization.
